Seiko has discontinued their Alpinist line after a long 57 years run, with the Seiko Alpinist SARB017 as the last in the line. Since 1961, the Alpinist has been in existence making it the third oldest sub-brand from Seiko. Through its rich 57-year history, there have been 6 generations of Alpinists. The main reason this line has lasted so long, and their standing as exceptional watches is mostly driven by the craftsmanship and accuracy built into each of these watches which was targeted for sports enthusiasts and mountain climbers.
The Seiko Alpinist SARB017 has an overall diameter of 38mm and measures just 12mm thick. The case is stainless steel with a brushed look on the top surface of the lugs and polished all the side surfaces of the watch. There are two large size crowns on this watch – controlling time/date at 3 and the inner rotating bezel compass at 4.
The dial has a unique green sunburst that changes its appearance based on the light conditions. It has very elegant gold cathedral-style hands with fine pointers at the end. It has LumiBrite, a Seiko-developed luminous paint which will illuminate ten times longer than conventional luminous paint. The sapphire glass is flat and slightly raised above the bezel to give a clean, edge-less appeal.
The movement in the Seiko Alpinist SARB017 is the caliber 6R15 23-jewel automatic movement that comes equipped with hacking and hand-winding capabilities with a 50 hour power reserve. Running at 21,600 beats per hour (6 beats per second), the movement moves six times per second for aesthetically pleasing sweep of the second hand.
Pricing at about $500, the Seiko Alpinist gives you the distinct-yet-professional style paired with the craftsmanship and quality. It is a truly classy timepiece that can be worn in any professional application from business-casual to a suit. A watch truly worth considering at this price point.
